Born in London and raised for ten years in Guyana, D’Aguiar’s poetry, novels, essays and plays draw from recollections, reactions and desires dealing with race, colonialism, love, politics, and more. He has published seven poetry books and six novels, and written two plays. He is also recipient of the David Hingham Prize for Fiction and the Whitbread First Novel Award. His latest poetry collection, The Rose of Toulouse, is inspired by the places he has lived and taught. His latest novel, Children of Paradise, is inspired by the events at Jonestown in 1978 and “the desire to tie in the destiny of that doomed colony in the Guyanese interior with [his] own late ’70s experience of England.” He currently teaches at UCLA.
