J. D. McClatchy is the author of eight collections of poems, including Hazmat (Knopf, 2002, a Pulitzer Prize finalist), and Mercury Dressing (Knopf, 2009), and, most recently, Plundered Hearts: New and Selected Poems. His literary essays are collected in White Paper (Columbia, 1989), which was given the Melville Cane Award by the Poetry Society of America, in Twenty Questions (Columbia, 1998), and in American Writers at Home (Vendome/Library of America, 2004; editions in French and German were also published). For Random House, he also edited the acclaimed The Voice of the Poet series of audiobooks, which includes the work of nineteen poets. In addition, he has published fiction and translations. His work appears regularly in The New YorkerThe New York Times Book ReviewThe Paris ReviewThe New Republic, and many other magazines. Since 1991, he has served as editor of The Yale Review. In addition, he has an increasingly prominent role in the opera house as a librettist.
