Poetry

Beginning with Robert Penn Warren, the teaching of poetry at Yale has continued with a succession of eminent poets. In our classes, close attention is paid to the fundamentals of the art and the craft of the line, which, taken together, create poetic effect. The voice of each individual student is nurtured and challenged through intensive workshops and individual conferences. Students are given the closest attention in their work, as teachers guide them towards a broadened sense of poetry’s capacities and towards more urgent depths of expression.
